Uruguay, plným názvem Uruguayská východní republika, je země v jihovýchodní části Jižní Ameriky, na východě regionu Cono Sur. Na západě a jihozápadě hraničí s Argentinou, na severu a severovýchodě s Brazílií, na jihu s Río de la Plata a na jihovýchodě s Atlantským oceánem. Většinu povrchu Uruguaye tvoří zvlněná rovina, která představuje přechod od téměř bezvýrazných argentinských pamp ke kopcovitým vysočinám jižní Brazílie. Panuje zde vlhké subtropické podnebí. Uruguay se dělí do 19 departementů, na ploše přibližně 176 000 km² žije téměř 3,5 milionu obyvatel a je tak po Surinamu druhou nejmenší samostatnou jihoamerickou zemí. Hlavním a největším městem je Montevideo, v jehož metropolitní oblasti žije více než 50 % obyvatel země. Mezi další velká města patří Salto, Ciudad de la Costa a Paysandú. Výrazná většina obyvatel jsou běloši, 10 % tvoří černoši a 6 % domorodí obyvatelé. Úředním jazykem je španělština, 54 % obyvatel je bez vyznání, 34 % katolíci a 6 % evangelikálové.
